The boys and I did a project for a friend of ours from Longview, TX. The project was Flat Stanley. Flat Stanley is a story about a boy who is flattened by a bulletin board when he sleeps. As a result he is able to travel in envelopes and have many adventures as a flat person. Here are a few picture we took with Flat Stanley.
Jared with some of our banana trees.
With Jared's class in the airplane they built.
Flat Stanley with O Pensador.
Flat Stanley with some African Statues.
Flat Stanley with the flags at the park.
Our house
Pepsi...something you do not see very often.
Flat Stanley and our maid, Armenda.
Flat Stanley on the school bus with Jared, Hana, Rachel and Farrah.
Football (soccer) stadium
Bungo and Flat Stanley. Bungo use to be my friends driver.
Shopping at Kero
Katie and Stanley at Kero.
Talatona is the area of town we live in. Benfica is the area of town where the market is at.
People selling stuff on the side of the road. The tree trunk you see is of an Imbondeiro tree. They are massive.
Our compound
Trash mountain.
This is a major road going to town. The blue and white vans are taxis.
A local store that we went to. They had fabric, thread, buttons, ribbon, toys and lots of other household items.
The front of the store. It was called Mabilio.
This is the fort they used during the civil war here.
On our way to the Ilha(Island) you can see the down town area.
Katie and I went and ate at the Lookal. It is very nice and not too expensive and right on the beach.
The needle looking thing is a monument for the only other president of Angola who has passed away. The Portuguese occupied Angola from the 1600s to the 1900s and their independence was in 1975 but they were in a civil war until 2002. The first president was Agostinho Neto and he is the one buried under the statue and he was president for 4 years from 1975-1979. The current President is Jose Eduardo dos Santo and he has been president since 1979 (32 years). Just thought I would give you a little history lesson.
Some more local houses on the beach.
Shoprite. This is the grocery store closest to our compound.
Baptista, my driver, and Flat Stanley. Not sure how happy he was to take a picture but he was a good sport. He has to put up with me every day after all. :-)
Shimo my friend from Egypt.
Jared and Jacob took him around the park and picked out what they thought were weird looking trees and took pictures with Flat Stanley by the trees. Here is Jared pointing at Flat Stanley in the tree.
Jacob wanted his picture with a speed limit sign because it looked different than ours.
This is one of my favorite trees in the compound.
The boys taking a break with Sophie for a picture.
The streets in our compound our lined with these trees. They usually have orange flowers on them.
Jared, Sophie and Flat Stanley in our alley.
Flat Stanley in our Avocado tree.
Taking a swim in the compound swimming pool. Yes he is missing a leg....it was a hard week for him.
